Appreciate the great overview! Been using my DT1990 (which also allow cable replacement) ever since they came out - they replaced my very very old DT990 (which never stopped working either); Beyerdynamic really makes brilliant and durable headphones. Really liking the voicing on this M90X microphone, I may have to give it a closer look....
Thanks, Monsieurr Claw! Yes, I've been really happy with the Beyer headphones for a long time and now the newer versions have already won me over. And that M 90 PRO X is quite good.
The 1990 Pro is a great headphone. I use a Lake People amp to drive it. Knowing about the "Beyer Peak" at 8 kHz and that drivers in some models are slightly different in volume ( I test it with white noise ), it's my favourite headphone.

Very nice initial review. Old Beyerdynamic headphones like DT770 and DT880 are manufactured since the 80s and are still the standard in studios. Some of the old pairs from the 80s and 90s are still around. By comparison consumer headphones are dead within 5 years. How is Beyerdynamic doing it? There is more to it than meets the eye! Of course Beyerdynamic headphones are very rugged, simple, but they do break sometimes. They are designed to have all parts user replaceable except for the cable, which is only user replaceable if the user has a soldering iron. You can order every part from Beyer's distributor. You can also 3d print the plastic pieces. Models are publicly available. You can also keep spare parts with you on an important job. We don't know about the longevity of the PROX headphones yet, but they have improved sound. 700PROX sounds better than DT770, which is often criticised by it's lack of lower midrange and annoying treble. 900PROX sounds more neutral than DT880, which is criticised for it's shallower bass and heavy, sibilant speech. DT880 however still has a little more spacious sound bubble, which has it's use in stereo recordings. PROX series has still most of it's parts user replaceable. You can even do a driver transplant without any special tools. Custom Cans did a teardown where you can see how. Overall great headphones for the price and in general for work. The next step up from Beyerdynamic is DT1990 and 1770 and I don't think it's necessarily worth it. They're more like a fun purchase than an investment.

I like it equally on both your voices (you, your wife, and Mike). Amazing video! I have a question about the details of these headphones, they're 48ohm, what do you think about the difference in the details between these and the 80 ohm version?
The DT 700 and 900 PRO X do really well in terms of high frequency definition and separation. I think the newer models do as well or better than the older 80 ohm DT 700 Pro.
My daily driver mic is the Beyerdynamic M201TG, which has been great. Good to see new options. I love replaceable parts for headphones. I will only buy headphones if a manufacturer offers replacement parts.

Good day, sir! I’ve got DT 700 Pro X today and tomorrow it will go back to the shop because of extreme pressure to my head. Could you tell please, is 900 Pro X more convenient? I’m thinking about replacement. But I still saw reviews where people told that they’re tight. And now I’m interested about it and the difference between 700 and 900.
The headbands and clamping seem about the same on the 700 and 900 to me. This is where headphones are very personal and where trying several yourself is usually the best approach. You can usually do that at places like Guitar Center in the US.
@@curtisjudd unfortunately I live in small town and have no opportunity to try different models. P.S. is that the new Rode mic arm in the back? we just ordered one. How is the mic locks on this one? the original version had a horrible mechanism.
Yes, I haven't used all of those, but my experience with Beyerdynamic has been really good so I'd probably opt for the 1770 Pros. Yes, that is the RODE PSA1+. The mic locks are a big step up from the cheaper boom arms I've used (HEIL specifically).
Shure are honestly not the best… nuremanns are 😍😍 but I think all around I would go for Beyerdynamics I’ve used them for a while and loved every second of it
@@nasserakasheh After reading dozens of reviews of the DT1770 on Amazon I have to say that the quality control seems to have some real issues on these ones. I didn't see anything like that on the Neumann. Interestingly some users claim that both are not really studio headphones in the sense that they color the sound in a pretty significant way. If this is true I wonder what high-end big studios use when they need quality closed-back headphones for voice work.
I have DT 1990 Pro - cracking headphones. Sometimes they are even too detailed in the high range and I quickly need to turn down the volume. Are those new ones similar or are they better balanced? If you could get DT 1990 Pro and make the comparison, that would be great. Cheers. Kamil
Hi Kamil, I don't have the DT 1990s on hand but will be interested to compare if the opportunity arises. The PRO X headphones did NOT seem overly high-frequency skewed to my ears.
@@curtisjudd Ok, so the yours maybe a bit better for casual listening than mine ones. It's a shame there is no single testing authority that would test and grade each headphone set like DxOMark for example. Thanks for the reply, Curtis. You're a star!
@@KamilsView My sense is that everyone hears a bit differently - different ear shape, different ear canal shape, different nerve health states at different frequencies, and even different head shapes and sizes. I find headphones to be far more subjective based on all of those factors.
@@curtisjudd BTW, Curtis. This is interesting: the DT 1990 Pro comes with another set of earpads that are even more analytical - too much for me (the sound is too sharp). There are also some 3rd party pads that offer more balanced sound - I may give them a go, actually.
@@RogerMassicotte one note of context: As open-back, the 900s don’t isolate as much (which is why I find them more comfortable for long periods). Also not good if you can’t have people around you hearing bleed from your headphones.
I find the rendering of the M90 pro x rather interesting, even "beautiful". For the M70, if the sound seems artificial to me, I find this tool very effective and well thought: without knowing how to mix, with a bad acoustic and music background, the voice should remain intelligible on all speakers. If this is the case, I find this proposal rather clever. Sorry for bad english and thank's.
@@johnnyharb8058 I don't have a reference point so I cannot really say whether it is boosted in any sort of objective way, but yes, in closed back headphones, bass almost always builds up a bit more. So it sounds more bassy than the 770 Pro 80 ohm and more bass than the 900 PRO X. Technically, the 700 and 900 PRO X use the same drivers and the main difference is the open vs closed back. For reference, I've always felt that the 770 Pro seemed to lack a bit of bass.
actually on the OG models DT770, 880 and 990 the headbands are also replaceable and theres several different 3th party bands plus many different 3th party earpads which make the headphones much more comfortable and you can tune the sound with the different earpads unlike DT700 and 900 Pro X theres NO 3th party headbands or Earpads for some reason Beyerdynamic Dosn't allow companies to make earpads for the new headphones and since the new headphones use new proprietary earpads non of the existing earpads fits meaning you are stuck with what bear gives you and they don't give you a second pair and they don't even sell different earpads only this one type for both headphones where you can get over 20 different types of earpads for the OG models and several different headbands plus you can mod the OG models with detachable cables even Balanced or just buy them modded unfortunately the new headphones don't offer anything new or anything better then the old ones you can much better paying little more for the DT1770 or DT1990 cause atleast then you can use all the earpads that fit beyerdynamic headphones
Well, how's the highs on the DT 900 pro X?! Was it fine & better than the 1990s? Because I don't like the 8.5khz peak in the 1990s. I hope they avoid that harsh high range on this one.
Hi Curtis. I wonder if you could help? I have looked online for hours, but no luck. Since adding a cloudlifter between my Podmic and Focusrite 4i4, Garageband doesnt want to let me record vocals. My cables are brand new and I have used phantom power. I’m using an IPad to run Garageband. Any ideas on a fix? Sorry, I know its off topic, but if anyone knows of a fix, its you. All the best and have a great weekend. Jason.
I'm not positive, but the first thing I'd look at is that the iPad only accepts 2 inputs from an interface and I'm not sure whether on the 4i4 if that is the stereo mix or just inputs 1 & 2. If it isn't already, maybe try plugging the cloudlifter into channel 1 or 2?
@@curtisjudd hey Curtis. It turned out to be a power issue. The pad didn’t have enough juice to turn on the 4i4’s phantom power and feed the Cloudlifter. I fixed it by plugging the Focusrite into a usb hub and adding a Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter to the iPad that allowed me to power and data link it to the hub simultaneously. Thanks mate.

But im considering on sending them back and getting the 900 x im not sure yet tho. Because i already got sennheiser hd 558 at Home that are open back. I love the 700 x but the problem is that my ears start itching due to the heat they produce
While Beyerdynamic's website still states 24-48h shipping for the 700 Pro X in the US, they are currently on a 4-6 week backorder per my inquiry into support. It's been 2.5 weeks since I placed my order.
If you are used to Sony's, Bose,JBL or beats for example, you can be underwhelmed. Those mentioned above are very base heavy without additional eq, but their base isn't precise, is often very muddy and just loud compared to the rest of the spectrum. Just buy the Beyer and use for example the aop+ peace EQ to add additional base if you feel the need for. The Beyer will sound bether, and have a bether bass than all those mainstream brands.
I got them for Christmas a few weeks ago and I like them, though I am reminded that mixing headphones are usually best for... mixing! Not for music enjoyment. @@curtisjudd I end up... for some reason... wanting to find a studio monitor for music listening, because I want accuracy, yet... not such a good idea, really. But in the "headphone community" (audiophiles), they often want pro headphones meant for mixing and mastering and then judge them based on whether they have enough bass or soundstage and things that the headphone probably isn't designed to deliver.
@@msd5808 A good mix and master job sounds good on these, in my experience. For those who want a more colored sound to their taste, there are a billion audiophile options out there.
@@johnnyharb8058 Subjectively they sound relatively even in terms of response, but I didn't measure that with anything other than my ears and subjective experience. Do they have an 8k bump? Nothing overwhelming that I heard, but possibly I missed it?
I saw these dissected, and the 900 Pro X are semi-open. Half of the vents are blocked on the inside. The 900 Pro X seems to have fixed the bass and SPL over the 990. I had the 990, and they were very comfortable, even with my eyeglasses. I went with a try for the 900 bc bass and SPL fixed, but hear that they clamp too hard. So, I will have to see, once I get them.
@@curtisjudd I got mine a few days ago. I notice that they go a little lower toward the chin more so than the 990 and they are a little tighter. I wouldn't use "Clamp" bc that's not how they feel. I have my EQ set to flat. So far, they sound great. def. more bass extension and accuracy and better mids than the 990. Def. flatter response, which I like. I haven't made any EQ adjustments, yet, bc still getting to know them. I do notice that one some high notes while listening to my typical Techno/Trance that they either distort a little and/or I am simply hearing more details than I ever did on my MDR-7506. I think it's just more detail. Pretty amazing. They sound so good that I don't want to take them off. Oh, and the SPL issue is def. fixed with these... plenty loud, if need be, which is good for songs recorded at lower dB. I hate all these songs nowadays that are recorded boosted to high hell.
Heads up, that while Beyerdynamic's website still states 24-48h shipping for the 700 Pro X in the US, they are currently on a 4-6 week backorder per my inquiry into support. It's been 2.5 weeks since I placed my order
My two very small quibbles with my DT 900 Pro X after several months of use are 1) the spring steel headband, as with most Beyerdynamic headphones that use it, is quite tight out of the box and took me the better part of a month to break in. 2) the mini-XLR connector into the ear cup is quite long, all told, and tends to catch on my hoodie or my shoulder when I turn my head to the left. Barring those extremely small quibbles they've been fantastic for editing, streaming, podcasting, and general use. I don't feel like I need to switch for listening to music or watching a movie.
i really can't understand if 700 pro x are good for listening music in everyday's life. i heard that they focus a lot of attention on non-bass frequencies so im a bit worried about buying them
Thanks for another great review. Coincidently, have been shopping for headphones just this week and was about to buy the DT880 based on your prior reviews, but now likely to go with the 900 Pro X. Is there any other model you'd recommend in the $200 to $300 price range?
I have the Sennheiser HD600 and love it, but I got the newer HD660s and they blow the 600’s away. Right now at B&H Photo, you can get the 660s for $389 so I would jump on those. Phenomenal open-back headphones.
I hope the M 70 PRO X works nicely for you! I think the only way to definitively choose between the headphones is to try both. I wish there were an easier way
@@curtisjudd Correct as always~I will wait the contributor to have them on the shelf so that I can try them out before picking one of these. (not for mic...since I'm just in love with dynamic ones~)

If you could only buy one pair of decent monitoring/editing headphones that would be great for both video editing and music, would you recommend one of these or do you have other ideas? I am not in a giant rush and I'm willing to pay a fair bit if necessary and look at a few. Hopefully you may know of a couple of good bets.
Hi Alan, good to hear from you. I am pretty biased as I've been using Beyerdynamics for over a decade. As such, I haven't done a lot of searching for others as these have served me really well. The only pair of headphones I appreciated more are the Sennheiser HD 800 and 820. Oh and the $60,000 HD1 from Sennheiser, but I only got to try that at the factory in Germany. 😉
@@curtisjudd Would these work well with the new Macbook Pro's low impedance capability?. Also, I am interested in your take on what the best flat monitoring headphones that do not alter anything.
@@curtisjudd That is a very good point. In any case, if you get your hands on DT 1990 Pro, I'd love to hear your take on them. Cheers.
@@curtisjudd BTW, Curtis. This is interesting: the DT 1990 Pro comes with another set of earpads that are even more analytical - too much for me (the sound is too sharp). There are also some 3rd party pads that offer more balanced sound - I may give them a go, actually.
Of the 700 or 900, which headphone model would you prefer for hours-long video calls?
900, definitely.
@@curtisjudd Thank you so much. With my best wishes for the New Year.
@@RogerMassicotte one note of context: As open-back, the 900s don’t isolate as much (which is why I find them more comfortable for long periods). Also not good if you can’t have people around you hearing bleed from your headphones.
@@curtisjudd It will be all right. I work solo from my home office.
That makes sense. Thanks for sharing your idea!
Incredible video as always! How would you say the Bass compares between the DT770 Pro and DT700 Pro X? Would it be worth upgrading?
The bass is much more prominent in the DT 700 PRO X.
@@curtisjudd Do you mean that it is bass boosted?
@@johnnyharb8058 I don't have a reference point so I cannot really say whether it is boosted in any sort of objective way, but yes, in closed back headphones, bass almost always builds up a bit more. So it sounds more bassy than the 770 Pro 80 ohm and more bass than the 900 PRO X. Technically, the 700 and 900 PRO X use the same drivers and the main difference is the open vs closed back. For reference, I've always felt that the 770 Pro seemed to lack a bit of bass.
@@curtisjudd thank you for your reply
actually on the OG models DT770, 880 and 990 the headbands are also replaceable and theres several different 3th party bands plus many different 3th party earpads which make the headphones much more comfortable and you can tune the sound with the different earpads unlike DT700 and 900 Pro X theres NO 3th party headbands or Earpads for some reason Beyerdynamic Dosn't allow companies to make earpads for the new headphones and since the new headphones use new proprietary earpads non of the existing earpads fits meaning you are stuck with what bear gives you and they don't give you a second pair and they don't even sell different earpads only this one type for both headphones where you can get over 20 different types of earpads for the OG models and several different headbands plus you can mod the OG models with detachable cables even Balanced or just buy them modded unfortunately the new headphones don't offer anything new or anything better then the old ones you can much better paying little more for the DT1770 or DT1990 cause atleast then you can use all the earpads that fit beyerdynamic headphones
Thanks for the insights. I still prefer the newer PRO X models after several months of use, But the older headphones were good, too.

Well, how's the highs on the DT 900 pro X?! Was it fine & better than the 1990s?
Because I don't like the 8.5khz peak in the 1990s. I hope they avoid that harsh high range on this one.
The highs seem pretty well balanced to me based on the listening I did with spoken word and music samples I listened to with the DT 900 PRO X.
@@curtisjudd wow ok. That's amazing! Thank you for the response😄
I fixed it by plugging the Focusrite into a usb hub and adding a
Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter to the iPad that allowed me to power and data link it to the hub simultaneously. Thanks mate.
@@StarWarsJay Ah, yes, that makes sense. Happy recording!

did beyerdynamic had any influence on your review (a.k.a. did you send the video before publishing it)?
No, they have not reviewed this video prior to posting. They provided the headphones and microphones to me at no charge so that I could create this video. They did not pay me further.
@@curtisjudd thank you for answering
@@curtisjudd Do you have to return the headphones and microphone to them ?
@@francoisrochette3808 No, as noted in the summary at the start, they gave them to me in exchange for making this video. I use the new headphones every day. I haven't used the microphones since the review, however.

i bought the DT 900 Pro x a week and a half ago how long do they take to ship anyone know havent even got my shipping tracking yet. I got them on the beyrdynamic website
Yeah took them like 3-4 days for me. I asked and they currently struggle due to the high demand right know.
I got the 700 pro x. But im considering on sending them back and getting the 900 x im not sure yet tho. Because i already got sennheiser hd 558 at Home that are open back. I love the 700 x but the problem is that my ears start itching due to the heat they produce
It took a few weeks for me.
While Beyerdynamic's website still states 24-48h shipping for the 700 Pro X in the US, they are currently on a 4-6 week backorder per my inquiry into support. It's been 2.5 weeks since I placed my order.
I consider myself a basshead... are the pro 700 ideal for me? What do you think?
Yep. Plenty of bass there.
The Beyer will sound bether, and have a bether bass than all those mainstream brands.
...on the Rode PSA1+ 😎
Yep!
grrrr... i've just received my DT990 pro black edition 250 ohm... never mind it was a bargain anyway (b stock) !
Enjoy the new cans!
Looks like quality
I agree.
I got them for Christmas a few weeks ago and I like them, though I am reminded that mixing headphones are usually best for... mixing! Not for music enjoyment. @@curtisjudd
I end up... for some reason... wanting to find a studio monitor for music listening, because I want accuracy, yet... not such a good idea, really.
For those who want a more colored sound to their taste, there are a billion audiophile options out there.
lol the 770 went 12 years. Wow. Beyerdynamic products were built to last.
For sure!
Dt 770 pro vs dt 700 pro x...?
My preference? 700 PRO X. What is the context of your question?
@@curtisjudd in terms of transparency and flat signal... A headphone that i can rely on more than the other between dt 770 pro and the dt 700 pro x.
@@johnnyharb8058 Subjectively they sound relatively even in terms of response, but I didn't measure that with anything other than my ears and subjective experience. Do they have an 8k bump? Nothing overwhelming that I heard, but possibly I missed it?
Don't forget the headphone amplifiers. The best headphones are useless if the amplifier can't drive them properly.
Good point. For the record, I used the headphone amp on the Universal Audio Apollo x6.
Thanks so much for the review, very helpful 👏👏👏
Thanks for watching!👍
I saw these dissected, and the 900 Pro X are semi-open. Half of the vents are blocked on the inside. The 900 Pro X seems to have fixed the bass and SPL over the 990. I had the 990, and they were very comfortable, even with my eyeglasses. I went with a try for the 900 bc bass and SPL fixed, but hear that they clamp too hard. So, I will have to see, once I get them.
I like the 900 Pro X.

My two very small quibbles with my DT 900 Pro X after several months of use are
1) the spring steel headband, as with most Beyerdynamic headphones that use it, is quite tight out of the box and took me the better part of a month to break in.
Thanks for sharing!
i really can't understand if 700 pro x are good for listening music in everyday's life. i heard that they focus a lot of attention on non-bass frequencies so im a bit worried about buying them
I listen to music on them all the time. But I'm not an audiophile.
Would the DT 700 work well with the Zoom F3? I'm looking to get some better headphones for field recording.
As well as can be expected from the F3, yes.
You could replace the headband on older models too. In fact is even cheaper on those...
Ok, good to know, thanks.
Thanks for another great review. Coincidently, have been shopping for headphones just this week and was about to buy the DT880 based on your prior reviews, but now likely to go with the 900 Pro X. Is there any other model you'd recommend in the $200 to $300 price range?
No, I'd definitely recommend the DT 900 PRO X.

dt 900 prox better than 1990 pro?
Not sure, I haven’t used the DT1990s.
Hi Curtis, hope you are well. I like that you actually use these so I'm intrigued. I could use a good solid pair of wired editing headphones.
I'm getting into music recording as well and need headphones that tell the absolute truth. You may know a few off the top of your head, and I reckon that would make an interesting YT piece. I understand you are all about video solutions so I'm not expecting anything here. Maybe I'll do that when I finally launch. I have to move so I've cancelled everything till I'm set up there. It'll take awhile.
